The View from the Top of the Steps - May 2015

Let the children play—stomp in the puddles … climb trees …. dig in the dirt … go on a bug hunt … make mud pies … roll down a hill … build a cubby … make a daisy chain … create a garden for fairies. Playing outside makes children smarter, healthier, happier.

That sentiment comes from “Let the Children Play,” a popular blog celebrating the importance of play in early childhood education. (Visit it at www.letthechildrenplay.net.) At Elmwood Franklin School, we too believe that play is part of the overall development of the whole child. The playground is the laboratory where children learn to interact, solve problems, explore space, develop motor skills, work through conflict, and so much more. For teachers, the playground is a place where we learn so much about the whole child by observing them play. Fred Rogers, known to many as the beloved Mr. Rogers, once wisely said, “Play is really the work of childhood.”

Extended Horizons 2014

It’s hard to believe that summer is just around the corner! This year, I am looking forward to three fun-filled weeks of Extended Horizons starting Monday, June 9 through Friday, June 27. We have some wonderful activities scheduled that I am sure your children will enjoy, including math and reading enrichment, sports, theater activities, arts and crafts, and field trips.

Please take a moment to review the following information regarding the Extended Horizons program for EFS students. Each child must bring a lunch every day and a refillable water bottle. Refrigeration will be available. Extended Horizons will serve a mid-morning snack and a late afternoon snack after 3:20 p.m. Weather permitting, we will go outdoors during the physical activity portions of the day, using the sprinklers and playing different organized group games. Please have your child pack a bathing suit, towel, running shoes, outdoor water shoes, and socks every day. No dress code is in effect! Sunscreen will be provided, so there is no need to pack it. Drop-offs and 3:20 p.m. pick-ups during Extended Horizons will take place in the library. The 5:45 p.m. pick-ups will run similar to regular Horizons. The staff member at the front desk will let you know where to find your child.

If you would like your child to participate in Extended Horizons, please return your completed form to the school no later than Friday, May 23. Spaces do fill quickly, so late or last minute enrollment may not be able to be accommodated.

As you may know, Elmwood Franklin Summer Camp, available to all children ages 3½ to 14, begins the Monday after Extended Horizons on June 30 and runs for six weeks. Please contact Clare Wagstaff, Director, or visit efssummer.org if you would like to participate.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding Extended Horizons at 877-5035 ext. 108 or mdirrigl@elmwoodfranklin.org.

Kind regards,

Maggie Dirrigl
Horizons Director
