As part of their ongoing Poetry unit, fourth graders had an unexpected visitor in writing class - math teacher extraordinaire, Alyssa Charles! Mrs. Charles shared several examples of clever poems about math, including one of her own. She then challenged the students to write their own poem about math. Many chose to write about Long Division, while other topics included circumference, multiplication, place value, and geometry. We can’t wait to see the final products (pun intended)!

by Shannon Victor and Mark Saldanha Now that the play has been announced (Willy Wonka), second graders couldn't wait to audition and get their hands on the scripts. Everyone did an outstanding job during the auditions, and we couldn't believe we were gifted with such an extraordinarily talented class. Students have a copy of their script to keep at school, and one copy that they should have taken home yesterday. They will be receiving song lyrics today, which will also go home. We now begin our rehearsal schedule (4x a week), but encourage everyone to practice their lines and the songs at home every chance they get!
by Judy Jurnack and Katie Holmberg Today marked an important occasion in the first grade. We celebrated the 101st day of 1st grade! Our day was filled with 101 Dalmatian activities. The students made words out of the letters in dalmatian, wrote short dalmatian stories, and decided what they would and would not want 101 of. In math, they took 101 steps from the first grade classes to see where they landed, measured objects that were 101 centimeters, and completed 101 math facts. Our little dalmatians were busy all over EFS today.
by Christine Marth and Leigh Mikulka Dr. Bob's VisitDr. Bob LaCarrubba came into fourth grade today to talk about dental hygiene, as February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Dr. Bob talked to the students about the anatomy of the mouth as well as how to properly brush and floss. Students were very eager to ask Dr. Bob questions and deepened their learning with each question they asked. We want to thank Dr. Bob for visiting and welcome him back any time. Reminders...As we continue working on our poetry anthology students must retype two of their approved poems. They must also illustrate a picture to go with each poem on a separate piece of white paper. These poems and illustrations are due Tuesday February, 28th.
Tests coming up... -Wednesday March 1 - Long Division test -Friday March 3 - Erie Canal Test by Shannon Victor and Mark Saldanha Recently, we got to Facetime one of our classmates who has not been in school. It was so much fun getting to use this form of communication to catch up with her!
by Kate Lynett and Kathleen McIntyre 3rd graders are very curious and inquisitive! Throughout our busy day, students often have questions about almost anything and everything in our universe! Students are invited to write their questions in our question book. Teachers respond to the questions and the next day, students excitedly enter the classroom anxious to see the response. Keep questioning 3rd grade! We love it!
by Kathleen McIntyre and Kate Lynett The 3rd graders have returned from Paw Paw, Michigan! Bravo! Every student had a blast learning their lines, practicing their steps, and singing their songs! If you find yourself needing some advice, do not hesitate to contact our Dear Edwina, advice giver extraordinaire!
by Shannon Victor and Mark Saldanha "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it". They have been studying hard all week, and today was the big Social Studies test on the thirteen colonies, national holidays, and the birth of our nation. Results will be coming home today in their home and back folder.
by Christine Marth and Leigh Mikulka Long DivisionStudents have been working really hard to master long division. They have been working with double and triple digit dividends with single digit divisors. Practice of multiplication facts in many different ways, including racing games with their classmates, have been a great way to make the transition to division so much smoother. LeadershipThe fourth grade continues to work with their Prep II partners in a leadership role. They have been working with them on reading readiness as well as story structure. Students from both grades truly enjoy their weekly time together. “15 Miles on the Erie Canal…” Students are working on a guided research project. The subject is the Erie Canal. This is their first experience with a research project. This time around they are being provided with sources in which they have learned to highlight key information and then paraphrase the information onto NoodleTools (an online note card system.) These notecards will be used later on to propel their research paper. This is a guided process that they will later use on a research paper of their own. Students have truly enjoyed working collaboratively on this project both in small groups and as a class. ReminderFourth graders are in full swing with poetry. Just a little reminder, each student must have their five photo copies of poems (title page and poem must be included) submitted by Friday.
by Judy Jurnack and Katie Holmberg Our Focus Wall is for the week of 2/27/17. Please note we won't have a test on Friday, 2/24/17 due to the short school week. Also, row and low are not part of List 6's test.
