Order in the court, order in the court! This week in reading, we’ve been learning all about trials and the process of law and order in the courtroom. Students read The Trial of Cardigan Jones and had to determine whether our famous moose, Cardigan Jones, was guilty or innocent. The students had a great time discussing due process and the fairness of a trial. Feel free to ask your child about Cardigan’s verdict!

During Math X, third graders explore mathematics through interactive games and centers. They are split into groups of four. Students adventure through various games and activities based on the skills and strategies taught during the current unit. Most recently, we have been working with place value, addition, subtraction, and word problems. We’re excited to be marching our way through math.

Third Grade: Getting Creative with Place Value

In math, third graders are thinking of creative clues to describe a 4-digit number.  Not only are they remembering place value but they are also learning other math vocabulary words such as product to help give clues for each digit.  Today students read their clues aloud for their classmates so that others could figure out their mystery number.  When writing their clues, students were reminded that numbers and math are everywhere, which inspired some creative clues that you should try to solve!

1st grade had a great time this week learning about apples.  They learned about Johnny Appleseed, wrote an apple poem, and had an apple tasting. They used their math skills by making tally graphs and graphing the tasting results.  Check out the graph to see which color apple most 1st graders prefer.

This year, Parents Night is on September 29, 2016. On this night, the parents will get to look at their child’s classroom. The 4th grade has prepared letters written on their new iPads. They’re so excited to present them to their parents. The letters include things that the 4th graders enjoy about 4th grade, their goals for the year, and things that they want their parents to notice in the classroom. Every grade has prepared something for the special night. “I think it will be great for the parents to learn about how their kids are doing in school,” said Lillian. “Parents Night is going to be amazing this year because of all the hard work that the students did,” says Audrey. Parents Night is going to be truly amazing.

Fill Your Bucket

On Monday at our Lower School Assembly, Mrs. Marth and Mrs. Kulpit spoke to the children about being bucket fillers rather than bucket dippers. Mrs. Kulpit read the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. Each one of us carries around an empty bucket. Acts of kindness fill our buckets and when we are kind to others, we fill their buckets as well as our own. When you are not thoughtful in your actions towards others, you are a bucket dipper. Dipping into someone else bucket makes them feel badly and you feel badly as well.

We are going to focus on being bucket fillers this year. Mrs. Marth explained to students that each lower school homeroom will now have its own orange bucket. When someone feels that a friend has filled their bucket or a teacher spots a student filling someone's bucket they will take a minute to jot down the example on a piece of paper and drop the paper into the bucket. Each week at our assembly we will fill a big bucket and pick out several examples so that we may recognize our bucket fillers and learn from their examples.

Have you filled a bucket today?

First graders were busy last week learning about tally marks and data collection.  They read tally graphs and collected data using their own individual graphs.  They played tally mark concentration and Dice Roll- Tally.  They even played Rock, Paper, Scissors while keeping tallies of the winner.  First Grade Math is so fun!

Geometry in 4th Grade

Fourth graders are in the midst of their geometry unit. This week we played a game called Sz’kwa, a Chinese children’s game, in one of our stations.  The game resembles checkers in the way you capture opponents markers although the shape of the board is very different.  The game board has 21 intersections made by curves and lines.  Players take turns placing their markers on the intersections trying to surround their opponent thereby capturing their opponent’s marker(s).  While students played Sz’kwa, the other station worked together to use their knowledge of quadrilateral “clubs” to sort and group quadrilaterals.  Fourth graders know that squares are an exclusive club where you must have four equal sides and four equal angles to get in; however they can also join other clubs like the parallelogram and rectangle clubs.  Students had to choose if a rhombus is always, sometimes, or never a rectangle; or if a trapezoid is always, sometimes, or never a parallelogram.
